A proud man learns the hard way that it’s okay to ask for help when you’re in need.
There was a man who worked very hard because he wanted to be as rich as his neighbors. He was always jealous of them and wanted to have as much money and things as they did. So, he worked and worked, and slowly, his wealth began to grow.
One day, as he was taking rice to another town for sale, his donkey had an accident and slipped hurting its head.
Concerned, the man sat there, worried about what to do next. Just then, one of his kind neighbors came by and offered to help.
But the proud man didn’t want to accept any help. He didn’t want to look weak in front of his neighbor. He said, “I can do it myself. I’ll carry the rice on my own!”
He had two big bags of rice—each weighing 6kg each! They were very heavy, and despite his neighbor asking to help him carry the bags yet again, the man still insisted on carrying them all by himself.
He struggled and struggled, but the bags were too much for him.
Soon, he collapsed on the ground, his back hurting badly from the weight.
The man lay there, wishing he had accepted the help.
Just then, his neighbor came back. The proud man begged, “Please help me!”
The neighbor shook his head and said, “You didn’t want my help before. Why should I help you now? I hope you remember that pride always comes before a fall.”
And with that, the neighbor walked away, leaving the man all alone.
Moral: Don’t let pride stop you from accepting help when you need it.
