The selfish king

The story of the selfish king. James was the most selfish King that the kingdom ever had. He loved the finest things in life and he was always enjoying lavish meals in his big palace. All the while most of the people in his kingdom lived in houses made of mud. In most cases, they slept hungry. The king did not care much about his people. It was even thought that he had forgotten about the kingdom. He had not been seen by the people in such a long time since he neither visited the town nor did he allow anyone in the kingdom to visit the palace. All he did was tax everyone in the kingdom.

One day, the people had had enough of the taxes, hunger, and the life they generally lived. They planned riots in the hope that this would get the king to do the right thing for the people, but this was not to be. At first, he tried to ignore all the noise the crowds were making outside his palace. However, he realized that he needed to do something otherwise the people would not go away. It was then that he promised everyone in the kingdom some money, “I have heard your cries” he said, “Do not worry, as your king, I love you all and I would like to promise you that everyone in the kingdom will get some money by next week Tuesday,” he continued.

Everyone was happy going home knowing that they would be getting some money soon. When Tuesday came, the people went back to the palace to collect the money they had been promised. The king had prepared a sack of coins for the people. He instructed the guards to give everyone a nickel. The people could not believe that this is what they had been waiting for…. the king had scammed them!

It was then that they realized that if they stayed in this kingdom, they would either die of suffering or the economy itself would die from the misuse of funds by the king. They all decided that it was time to leave their home and look for another kingdom to start a new life. With no one left in the kingdom to rule over or pay taxes, the kingdom became poor and the king could no longer be king.
