The Odd One Out

The Odd One Out

This is a story about the odd one out whose actions caused him his loneliness.

Once upon a time, on a magical farm, there was a field full of pumpkins that came alive at night! Every evening, as the moon climbed high, the pumpkins would dance and laugh, throw parties, and even go to the theater for movies and popcorn. The townspeople never suspected a thing, except for a curious boy named Hank.

Hank was happy to be among the pumpkins. He wasn’t scared of them at all. In fact, he loved being around them because they reminded him of his old life. You see, Hank used to be a pumpkin too! Until one night when a child bit him, and Hank magically turned into a human.

The bite had turned Hank into the spitting image of a long-lost celebrity. The town thought Hank was their superstar who had come back after many years away. They treated him like a king, but Hank missed his pumpkin friends dearly.

Hank tried everything to become a pumpkin again, but nothing worked.

One day, he had a clever idea. “Maybe,” he thought, “if I turn all the pumpkins into humans, I won’t be so different anymore!”

So, Hank mixed a special potion of his saliva, some of his blood, and pumpkin leaves. He planned to spray it on the pumpkins while they were at the movies.

That night, as the pumpkins enjoyed their usual movie night, Hank released his potion on the pumpkins. They turned into strange creatures with pumpkin heads and human bodies! Nothing close to what Hank looked like at all.

They thought that if they explored the town, they’d be welcomed as new people. But the townspeople were scared and thought the pumpkins were freaks, so they chased them away instead.

Feeling sad and disappointed, the pumpkins moved to a nearby farm and started a new life as farmers. They used their special pumpkin slime to water their plants, which made their farm thrive.

One day, a terrible disaster struck the town. The humans ran out of food and didn’t know where to turn. The only place that had something to eat was the pumpkin’s land. Turns our their slime water made their farms immune to the disaster.

The humans came to the pumpkin land to beg for some food. The pumpkins were happy to  share their food, and it was so magical that anyone who ate it got pumpkin heads!

Now, Hank was the only human who did not transform due to his history, He was the only one left in the town with his old ‘normal’ human face.

He felt even more like an outsider, more like the odd one out.

The townspeople had all turned into pumpkin-headed people, and Hank was left all alone, missing his old pumpkin friends who were now living happily as farmers.
